PMI2 Design & Engineering Considerations
The PMI-2 can be used in a project just like a PMI. Make sure that a PMI-2 is selected in the Zeus configuration. As a
result, all features and limitations currently applicable to a PMI are also applicable to a PMI-2. However, due to PMI-
2’s increased processing capability, some new enhancements have been added.
Global PMIs in a networked FireFinder XLS system: Maximum of 10 GPMI-2 units are allowed in a Global
Voice configuration when using an NRC ring architecture. A maximum of 5 GPMI-2 units are allowed in a NIC-C
architecture. No change from PMI.
Colors: The PMI-2 supports different colors for different event lists, with red for alarm events, yellow for
trouble events, blue for supervisory events, and magenta for security events.
Local PMIs in a networked FireFinder XLS system: Maximum of 64 PMI-2 units are allowed in either a NIC-C or
NRC architecture. Note that the PMI only supported 59 units.
Logic Functions: PMI-2 supports a maximum of 2500 logic functions in a single node. A AND, OR, D LATCH,
START TIMER etc are examples of logic functions. This is a marked improvement from PMI which supported only
1500 functions. Improved PMI-2 microprocessor speed combined with increased memory therefore makes it
possible to combine fire, voice and smoke control functionality in a single node.
External References: Similar to logic functions, the maximum number of external references has also been
increased to 1000 for the PMI-2. The PMI only supported 500 external references. A logic function that
references a point physically located in a different node counts as an external reference.
The result is that the PMI-2 supports fire events, voice evacuation, and smoke control in a single node, as long
as the logic function and external reference limits are observed.
The supervisory current draw of the PMI-2 is 190 mA, lower than the 230 mA required for the PMI.
Connecting cables for the PMI-2 are exactly the same as those used to connect the PMI to the rest of the
system.
The PMI-2 supports integral Mounting slots for SCM-8 or LCM-8 modules. The PMI-2 come with two
removable cover plates below the main operator interface where the switch or LED module can be installed.
System configurations and module firmware upgrades are transferred from a laptop computer to the PMI-2 by
a USB connection. This not only provides a faster transfer mechanism, it relieves the requirement to use a serial
connection or converter. Since many modern laptop computers do not have a serial port, this feature is a
welcome change.
PMI-2 panel firmware is transferred from the laptop computer to the PMI-2 by an Ethernet connection. These
large system files are transferred much faster than the current serial connection, and with greater reliability.
Global PMI database information is stored on an SD memory card instead of a PCMCIA card. Many modern
laptops do not have a port to write directly to a PCMCIA card, but may write to an SD card from a built-in port.
Also, SD cards can be inserted and removed from the card slot on the PMI-2 without removing power from the
unit. Lastly, the SD memory card slot is accessible from the back of the PMI-2 without removing the back cover
of the unit.
